Consol Energy, Synthesis Energy Systems to partner on gasification plant

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Coal producer Consol Energy Inc. said Monday it will partner with Synthesis Energy Systems Inc. on a gasification plant in West Virginia to produce gasoline and methanol.

Consol and Synthesis, a Houston-based energy and technology company, will contribute equally to the initial phase of the Northern Appalachia Fuel LLC project.

Coal from Consol's nearby Shoemaker complex will be converted into syngas, which will be used to produce about 720,000 metric tons per year of methanol, a feedstock for the chemical industry.

Consol said the plant will also use some of the methanol to produce about 100 million gallons per year of 87-octane gasoline.
