Environmental groups sue over phosphate mining permit to Mosaic in southwest Florida

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Environmental activists are suing the federal government for allowing phosphate mining on environmentally sensitive land in southwest Florida.

A coalition of environmental groups sued the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tuesday to try to block a permit issued to the phosphate company Mosaic allowing strip mining in the Peace River watershed near Bradenton.

The lawsuit says the permit authorizes the destruction of 480 acres of sensitive wetlands.

The suit seeks an injunction to halt the mining permit pending a full environmental impact review.

Calls to Mosaic and to the Corps of Engineers regional office in Jacksonville weren't immediately returned.
