Hovensa Refinery Reopens
October 20, 2008
One of the world's 10 largest oil refineries is back online in the U.S. Virgin Islands after being shut down in anticipation of Hurricane Omar.
But Hovensa LLC spokesman Alex Moorhead says it will take several days for the refinery on St. Croix to reach pre-hurricane production levels. Hovensa refines about 500,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
Moorhead declined to say Friday where current production levels stand.
Officials shut the facility down Wednesday. Moorhead said an inspection found no significant damage.
Hovensa is owned by New York-based Hess Corp. and Petroleos de Venezuela SA, the national oil company of Venezuela. It is the largest private employer in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
