Ten Sunoco workers hospitalized after refinery leak
Wednesday, March 11, 2:40 pm ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Ten workers at Sunoco Inc's 335,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were treated for exposure after an acid release Wednesday morning, a company spokesman said on Wednesday.
Thomas Golembeski,a spokesman for the refiner, said the leak occurred at 10:30 am local time in an alkylation unit and that the workers were taken to two area hospitals out of an "abundance of caution."
Golembeski said the leak had been stopped but the nature of the leak nor the cause had been determined. He said the company was investigating.
He said he was unsure if the alkylation unit, which adds octane to motor fuel, was shut down completely.
