Albemarle Breaks Ground on Hydroprocessing Catalyst Plant

BATON ROUGE, La., June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As petroleum fuel refiners face the dual challenge of meeting rising U.S. and global fuel demand and rigorous clean fuels specifications, the need for top-performance hydroprocessing catalysts is greater than ever. Refiners will soon find relief on both fronts from Albemarle.
Albemarle Corporation, a leading global supplier of catalysts and additives to the petroleum refining industry, recently broke ground on a new 10,000 metric tons-per-year capacity hydroprocessing catalyst (HPC) production plant at its Bayport facility in Pasadena, Texas, and set the plant to begin production in the first quarter of 2007.
Albemarle first announced the new plant in 2005 as part of a larger capacity-expansion project to meet growing HPC demand. Hydroprocessing catalysts are used in virtually all petroleum refineries around the world and are essential for the production of clean fuels.
"Refiner demand for our HPC products, such as those from our STARS and NEBULA families, is outpacing our current capacities, thus driving the need to increase capacities at our Bayport and Amsterdam plants, as well as the plant of our joint venture, Nippon Ketjen, in Niihama (Japan)," said Huub Cuijpers, Albemarle HPC global business director. "The capacity increase at Bayport is the most substantial of the three expansions, and is needed first and foremost to help meet rapidly building demand for our products in the Americas."
The company also will add a specialized production line at its Amsterdam site; implement debottlenecking activities at Bayport and Amsterdam; and make additional investments in its laboratories. A third debottlenecking project is being considered for Niihama, as well.
"These investments demonstrate Albemarle's continuing commitment to be the global leader in catalysts," Cuijpers said.
