Process Utilizes Solutia's Proprietary Therminol VP-3 Heat Transfer Fluid

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 27, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Solutia Inc. today announced that Jerry L. Brown of Heflin, Ala. (retired) and Patrick P.B. Notte of Wavre, Belgium, have received a U.S. patent for a process to manufacture specialty polymers and plastics using Solutia's Therminol(r) VP-3 heat transfer fluid. The patent (U.S. 7,091,309) was granted on August 15, 2006.

Therminol(r) VP-3 is a proprietary fluid that offers a boiling point of 243 C, which is lower than conventional biphenyl/diphenyl oxide eutectic fluids, giving users more flexibility in operating in the vapor phase region. The lower boiling point enables manufacturers to easily process or spin nylon 6 or specialty polyester-based polymers at a lower temperature, which they could previously achieve only by operating a conventional biphenyl/diphenyl oxide heat transfer system under vacuum.

According to the patent, the developed process defines the method for manufacturing temperature-sensitive polymers and plastic products in a manner that overcomes difficulties which previously had rendered such a method commercially unviable. The unique formulation of Therminol VP-3 makes this possible, and it is the preferred chemistry selected from a variety covered by the patent. Additional benefits provided are improved environmental, safety and health properties. For example, Therminol VP-3 is not on the reportable quantity (RQ) lists of Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) or Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), nor is it listed as a hazardous air pollutant by the Clean Air Act. The product also carries with it physical properties that can reduce installed costs and operating costs to users versus the use of traditional vapor phase heating alternatives.

Solutia is the world leader in synthetic heat transfer fluids, providing more than 40 years of excellence in technical support, customer service, performance and innovation.
