WASHINGTON, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Leaders from the biotechnology, chemical and agricultural industries will join with government officials and academics for the second annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing April 20-22, 2005. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), American Chemical Society (ACS), EuropaBio, the National Agriculture Biotechnology Council (NABC), and the Society for Biological Engineering will host the conference at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel in Orlando, Fla.

his year's conference will feature a number of thought provoking plenary addresses including remarks from Iowa Governor Thomas J. Vilsack; Paul Roberts, author of the critically acclaimed book The End of Oil: On the Edge of a Perilous New World; and Richard Worzel, one of North America's leading futurists and strategic planners, and author of The Next 20 Years of Your Life.

"The first World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing was a great success," stated Brent Erickson, vice president and head of BIO's Industrial and Environmental section. "In 2004 we had over 400 attendees, twice the number of attendees we expected, register for our inaugural event. This year we expect an even greater turnout because the program will feature some very provocative speakers who will be showcasing the newest developments in what we call the third wave in biotechnology -- industrial biotechnology. Last year this conference attracted attendees from all regions of the U.S. and 18 foreign nations -- this year we expect attendees from all 50 states and 25 foreign countries.

"This is the only conference in the world dedicated solely to industrial biotechnology and overnight it has become the place to be for business leaders who want to stay competitive in the global market place and for scientists who want to stay abreast of the most recent advancements in this new field that has been labeled the 'third wave' in biotechnology," Erickson added.

"Industrial biotech involves harnessing nature's own microbial workhorses and using them to transform how companies make a host of new products. As these new biotech processes begin to replace old rust belt technologies, they are creating a new industrial revolution based on biology instead of petroleum. These new biotech manufacturing processes are not only cleaner and greener -- they are dramatically cutting costs for companies that now use them. The program will range from new ways to make ethanol motor fuel, discovery of new drugs in marine life forms, to the nanotech-biotech interface," Erickson concluded.

The meeting will also feature three days of breakout sessions touching on such topics as Transforming the Ethanol Industry; Cell Factories and the Pathway to Bioderived Chemicals; Marine Biotechnology: Promising Drugs from the Sea; Exploring the Biotech-Nanotech Interface; Biological fuel Cells, and Industrial Biotechnology for Food and Feed.

Advance media registration for the World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and BioProcessing is now available online. Registration is complimentary for credentialed members of the news media.
