Kraton Introduces New UV Reactive Technology for Low Density Foamed Adhesive Systems

New Technology Allows for Higher Service Temperatures, Delivers Process Efficiencies and Cost Savings
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kraton Polymers LLC (Kraton), a leading global performance polymer producer, today announced the successful introduction of highly reactive adhesive polymers that can be cross-linked with UV radiation, and subsequently expanded into low density foamed adhesive systems. This new innovation has been catalyzed by a highly cross-linkable SBS grade, allowing for new application development and market opportunities.
This new SBS grade specifically targets technically demanding applications, such as automotive. Applications include use in sprayable foamed adhesives, the preparation of gaskets and sealants having the ability to expand in place, and potentially in acoustical and vibration damping applications.

Facilitated by the highly cross-linkable SBS grade (patent application #: WO2006/100210), Kraton has produced reactive adhesive systems which can be easily processed and then cross-linked by exposure to UV radiation. This new polymer technology is extremely advantageous as it couples the inherent processability and functional advantages of SBCs with a number of performance properties typically associated with thermoset polyurethane (TPU) and natural rubber adhesive systems. The end result expands the capabilities of SBC adhesive systems to higher service temperature ranges and improved solvent and chemical resistance.
Through continued research and development efforts, Kraton has further expanded the UV reactive technology into low density foamed adhesive systems. With Kraton's new technology, the polymer system can now be UV cross-linked and then expanded via heat activation to achieve density reductions in excess of 65 percent.
